Abstract

When utilizing the Sois and Ponz method of succesive absorptions the following requirements must be taken into account:

1. The filliug pressure must be the same in all experiments.

2. The length of the loop of intestine must be chosen to suit the volume of fluid employed (see 5 below).

3. The capacity of the entrance and exit carnudas and tubes must be as reduced as possible.

4. The duration of each experiment of absorption must be constant in the whole series of experiments. However the employ of different times may be convenient in comparing sugars which are absorbed at ven different rates, but then it is necessary to take this into account.

5. In order to study the absorption of glucose from isotonic solution (5.4 percent) in the rat, the best suited conditions according to the above are: loops of about 30 cm. length; a volume of 10 c. c. with water filling pressure of about 12 cm., or 7.5 c. c. with a pressure of 5 cm.; and a duration not longer than 45 minutes for the 12 cm. pressure, or 20 minutes for the 5 cm. pressure.

The necessity of working at about 30°C must be insisted upon.
