Abstract

The effect of feeding linoleate and linolenate together, upon the fatty acid compo- sition of liver phospholipids of weanling rats previously fed a fat free diet was investigated.

Feeding with linoleate and linolenate caused a decrease in fatty acids, whilst fatty acids synthezised from linoleate and linolenate were incorporated into phosphatides. The eicosatrienoic acid oleic type did not completely disappear, and was found together with a secón isomeric form which was not present in rats fed a fat free diet. The structure of the second isomer was determinated by both oxidative and reductive ozonolysis. It was found to be the A8>11,14-C20.3» which is an intermedíate product in the synthesis of arachidonic acid.
