Differences in serum holoproteins, glycoproteins and lipoproteins and brain holoproteins of various species of mammals determined by polyacrylamide electrophoresis

Abstract

A comparative study is made on serum from sheep, cow, pig, horse, ass, mule and in some cases, rat, hammster and rabbit. It shows different patterns according to the species for proteins and glycoproteins when separated by disc electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel; some differences are also observed for lipoproteins when strips of cellulose acetate electrophoresis are employed. Brain proteins of the above-mentionned species submitted to disc electrophoresis give some bands different between them in number and intensity.


In contrast with human serum which possess a polymorphism due to the haptoglobins types, in the above-named species this polymorphism has not been found.


The importance of disc electrophoresis as a tool to help the resolution of some taxonomical problems is discussed.
