One of the characteristics of german romantic playwrights is the preference for heterogeneity which appears as well in the melting of comic and tragic tone as in the combination of comedy and tragedy. To Schlegel and Schelling, as representative theoreticians of this period, the works of Calderón seemed the most modelic demonstration of this kind of procedure.
