Goiter-inducing effects of milk. I. Study of iodine balance in rats fed with milk

Abstract
lodine balance was studied for one year in two groups of Weistar rats. The experi mental group (group A) was fed on milk from a goitrous area, whereas the control group (group B) was fed on regular farm milk.
Throughout the experiment the amount of iodine ingested was higher for group A, this was due to the higher iodine contení of the milk of goitrous origin. Comparisons of the tangents of the two regression lines led, however, to a non-significant dif- ference (P = 0.27).
lodine elimination in faeces was significantly higher for the control group, which is probably due to the deficient iodine ingesta of this group.
It is concluded that the milk of goitrous origin under study did not affect iodine balance.
