Abstract

72
In this essay, the author considers that the “Discurso previo, teológico, ético y político” that precedes Quevedo’s La constancia y paciencia del santo Job, composed when the writer was imprisoned in San Marcos de León, dated 1641, is a text in which Quevedo continues his reflections on his own art of poetry and literature, stressing aspects already commented in other texts around 1631. In those texts, Quevedo inserted criteria that tried to justify the use of other kinds of poetic discourses, different from the grand style. A very important aspect was the defence of adapting the style to the character. In 1641, the concept of evidentia is one the ideas that will organise the “Discurso previo”, concept analysed by professor Martinengo. This concept permits the use of words belonging to the low style if the writer needs them.
